Hello,

I am trying to do connect two distant mac computers through OSC on PD_extended.

I send the message [connect xx.xxx.xxx.xxx yyyy] to [sendOSC] where xxx... is the remote's computer IP address and yy... is the port.

I have been unable to connect the two computers this way, no matter if on one direction or the other

I suspect this may be because the ports I use have to be opened AND not used by other services. As I scanned my ports, found that 80 (web) and 21 (ftp) were open and attempted to use those without success.

Can somebody help me at least realize where does the problem exactly lay so I don't have to walk around the dark with a stick hitting stuff for days?

of course on the receiving computer I do have a [dumpOSC yyyy] object, where yyyy matches with the port used on the sending computer's [sendOSC] object

I will add that connecting on localhost, no matter the port, works well on sending and receiving

Ok I found the answer and it is YES, you have to open a port in the router to be able to connect through OSC (i.e. [tcpsend] , tcp is reccomended to communicate over the Internet).

To open a port in your router you will most probably need to change the network settings in the receiving computer in order to have a static IP address (one that does not change on reboot) which you need to set manually (not DHCP) including primary and secondary DNS.

Once that is done and working, you have to access your router and find the "virtual servers" or "port forwarding" menu option; and enter the range of ports you want to open (can also be just one, i.e. from 9997 to 9997) and also if TCP or UDP (if using tcpsend, then select TCP or TCP/UDP alltogether) then save and restart, and its done.

Now you can use that open port to establish the connections.
