That thing gives some noises to a guitaramp, analyses the responded signal, creates a filter(??? the main voodoo), and stores this profile as a preset.

I am NOT (yet) a DSP programer, but interested in the involved techniques in general.
So maybe some of the advanced Gurus can give some hints/ideas/explanations.

as far as i know, kemper uses dynamic convolution, taking a sample for each frequency on different volumes, thus mimicking the distortion/coloration of the amp.

Shouldn't be too difficult to do, i guess.

I think dynamic convolution is limited to modeling a memory-free waveshaper through a linear, time-invariant filter (or a time variant filter that's changing along one "dimension" only). It's not a great general model for guitar amps, as their actual behavior tends to be a lot more complicated, but it's about as good as you can do with a "black box" approach. I think it's overhyped as a "model anything" solution.

There are a number of papers on it, but I don't know which are the most up to date. I think you could use a PD patch to automate the recording of the impulse responses, and also to implement the processing (though this might be pretty involved), but I expect you'd have to process the recordings using Matlab or Octave or something to get usable impulse responses.
