I'd like to smooth out a curve, previously drawn in a graph.

Such curves seem to be smooth in their small window, but when one looks at the values the whole curve is nothing but a staircase following the curve.

I'd like to draw a displacement curve in a graph, and then differentiate it to get a speed curve (an [rzero~1] does the trick decently). But every step of the staircase leads to 'abnormal peaks' in speed, leaving a messy resulting curve.

I can't figure out how could I make a kind of envelope follower but for a command signal. Automated replacing of 'steps' by linear ramps would be possible using iem-tab externals but this is rather rough... It should be possible to estimate a bottom value for step length in a given gui, though.

Has anybody an idea ? I'm dreaming of putting a long stretched carped over this staircase.

You can smooth it out with some sort of lowpass filter. You remember that post a while ago about upsampling to filter out aliasing from distortion? It's kind of like that. That velocity curve with peaks is similar to what you get when you upsample a signal: peaks with zeroes in between them.

It would probably be best to filter out the input going into the table. Of course, it would be even better if you could figure out how to avoid having a stair-cased signal to begin with.

Thanks Maelstorm, but this doesn't work. The speed curve I draw may have sudden rises or falls (accelerations), so it seems impossible to maintain global curve aspect when cleaning the 'clics'.
