buchla style sequencer abstraction (from what I understand about buchla sequencers).

edit: new, more accurate Buchla "Arbitrary Function Generator" abstraction; the inside is the messiest thing I've ever seen in Pd though.

inlets: #1: start, stop (1/ 0)
#2: Randomize on/off (1/ 0)
#3: Step offset (0 - 15)
#4: all steps output on/off (1/ 0)
#5: Fill 1st Bank of outputs (any float)
#6: Fill 2nd bank
#7: Fill 3rd bank
#8: Number of steps (1 - 16)
#9: Fill and sync bank 3 with tempo on/off (1/ 0)
#10: tempo (20 - any float), in ms
#11: All steps always nested loops on/off (1/ 0)

Outlets: 1st 16: 1st bank of floats 2nd 16: 2nd bank 3rd 16: 3rd bank

The way the nested loops work: the top left number box shows the next repeat to take place. the number box on the bottom left controls how many times to jump to the specified step, the bottom right number box controls which step to specify, the toggle on the upper right turns "always" mode on and off. When always mode is on, the step always jumps to the destination step, whereas if it is off, it will jump to the destination step as many times as specified in the bottom left number box.

When offset is used with nesting, it will jump to the offset# + the specified step, but it will still jump from the un-offsetted (?) step. Randomize doesn't work with nesting either.

The real thing can also quantize and interpolate, but that should be easy to do with line after the outputs.

I programmed it really messily, and I don't really want to deal with the clean up, but you don't need to deal with it unless you want to make changes to it.

It's an abstraction. That means that it will show up when you create and save a new pure data patch in the same folder as the abstraction (which in this case is called "sequencer.pd"). When you have both patches in the same folder, make an object in the patch you just created and type "sequencer" into it. Then the sequencer should show up without the giant mess of programming. Alternatively, you can put the abstraction into a folder and set the path to the folder. What I do is I have a folder called "Pd Utility" and I set the path to that folder. Then, whenever I have an abstraction that I'd like to use more than once I simply put it in that folder.

The way to set the path is : open Pd, go to Pd Extended/preferences/Path... and then select the folder you want to load abstractions from

Okay, this is really awesome..already thinking of making a patch around it just so i could use some hardware midicontroller to controll it in a nice way..hmm 155 different controls..

update: nested repeats now start when the repeat number is changed (not 2X afterwards)
lists can be sent to objects to send information to the sequencer which is why there is now a subpatch number indicator in the top left (replace $0 in the "object names" with this number). The way I like to send lists is make a message box, put a semicolon, press enter, object name, and then a list with 16 places for values (toggles accept 1 and 0). put another semicolon after the list.
Object names:
line1-$0, line2-$0, and line3-$0: values for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rows
tempo-$0: tempo toggles-$0: turn steps on/off
neststep-$0: step for nesting to jump to nestrepeat-$0: times to repeat
nestalways-$0: turn always jump on/off

i used it to trigger my synth. nothing fancy with the filling of the banks yet just every now and then changeing the melody and simply using the 3 banks for note, level, duration. I can think of a lot of ways this thing can be really useful.

Here's the newest version that I've been fiddling with, I cleaned it up and used sends/receives for the gui. this means everything is controllable through sends/receives and also I added some variables to get the current state of the sequencer. Some of the handling is slightly different, I think offset/step acts differently and now random works with nesting. I attached a textfile and helpfile that should explain everything

I took away the banks, really no reason to have them except to emulate the buchla synth .it's probably better to have indices coming out of the sequencer and use them to lookup into an array

Thanks man, I was just getting ready to edit the thing so I could have multiple instances and just add a route to the first inlet so that I could make some random note patterns or not random note patterns I guess sort of like having a structured set of notes with 2 or more sequencers and then change to another cord or mode with all that nesting ought to be pretty nice to jam along with. also recorded a 3 hour jam with 2 sequencers last night. I accidently closed my fractal sequencer sometime during the first hour, i was just getting ready to mess with the synths and get them dialed in to the sound I wanted after getting all the instruments tuned, the microphone , good and grounded as well as the headphones. The tuning is mostly 22edo or modes od 22edo since my piano is mostly tuned to a 12of22 whitekeys porcupine[7] and black keys superpyth[5] the piano actually needs a good tuniong going over but it was still fun to jam with the synth sequences being perfectly in tune to porcupine15circ which is what I named MEANTONE-KILLER accidently. so the4 synth starts out in 22edo then porcupine15 then porcupine[7]. The piano is somewhat tuned to 12of22, all the instruments are fretless but I have markers on them. It was mostly just having fun recording and learning some modes and seeing how tihs mixed mode tuning works, porcupine is cool because you can play it in 22 or 15 edo and it sounds great. I even playd in 7edo and also some JI overtop of it while I was listening to the new lite version of xensynth. definately the most fun I've had recording in quite some time.
