Hi all!
I just installed Ubuntu studio Karmic (which apparently has the rt kernel back), and everything's working fine ... except for Pd! Which is really too bad because i only installed it to be able to use Pd with the lowest possible latency.
I ve read some thread about other instances of Pd being excessively slow, but i could not find any real solution.
Has anybody encountered this problem before?

Pd super slow in Ubuntu Studio 9.10 !
-
yeah it did that to me at first. wish i knew a better solution, but all i ended up doing was re-installing ubuntu, and it was ok.
-
May i ask you what version of Ubuntu you're using?
-
now i am using 9.10 karmic koala. i know very little about linux, so i just have the basic installation of that. pd works fine, but i have no need for low latency and run with a 50ms buffer for pd.

Thank you for your reply. I ve just given up. Seems like my Dell laptop doesn't get along too well with Ubuntu. I ve tried at least 4 distros and none would work
-
Weird, it works fine on Ubuntu Studio 9.10 (32-bit) on my 7-year-old desktop. I'm using pd-extended though, and I might have compiled it from source because I couldn't find any Karmic builds when I installed it.

I tried both Pd vanilla and Pd Extented with no noticeable difference. I think the origin of the problem lies in my laptop itself (Dell Latitude D520), which doesn't seem to be compatible with Ubuntu (even Hardy LTS doesn't work).
Anyway, thanks for your reply. -
Quite sure you have desktop-effects runnig.. On an old laptop Ubuntu won't switch that on, but on newer laptops Ubuntu now puts desktop effects on by default.
Not sure if it helps, but I would really try out if it helps to switch this off:System --> Preferences --> Appearence.
Click on 'Visuals' tab and try 'None'.Let us know!

I uninstalled Ubuntu definitely on my Dell, but i think i did check that when i was trying to make it work. I am pretty sure i had no visuals running though. Then again i don't believe we can infere anything from my experience as this laptop doesn't seem to work well with any Ubuntu distro i've tried. It seems like the video card isn't supported (which probably causes various display issues).
Thanks for your reply anyway! -
sounds hardware specific; try running pure:dyne live (http://puredyne.goto10.org/) and see if you get the same problem
-
I had the same problem ... then I realized that forcing the system to use ALSA instead of OSS would make the system run normally.
I think there might be something wrong with the audio still ... but I don't need it, as it'll be doing sound synthesis in another piece of software. -
I m using Fedora 12 with the Planet CCRMA rt kernel and it's working just fine.

I start use Lubuntu, Ubuntu version for laptops. All works fine. Just if I get more load on PD it gets laggy, get feeling that system cannot handle it, it takes lots of processing on windows, to get something like this. Been thinking is it possible to fix this somehow.
I have pretty good laptop (i7 quad processor, 8gb ram and good video card), and it works fine on windows. I been thinking, that linux should perform way faster and it could handle more load.

HardGroove, I think you are better off creating a new thread as this thread is hardly relevant anymore as it 4-5 years old.
Btw, I am using Ubuntu 13.10 on an i5 processor, 8gb of RAM and no video card and it works fine for me. I've also tried it on Xubuntu with same results. So I am pretty sure your experience is not normal. Your computer should be able to handle it just fine.

Hello guys:
Unfortunately, I have experienced the same on Debian Wheezy, PdExtended 0.43-4 and Ubuntu 13.04 with the same PdExtended.
On the other hand, the old good PdExtended 0.42-5 still rocks on Debian Squeeze on another machine. Seems that separating the gui from the core of Pd had some detrimental effect, as seen on these systems. I am very sad about this, since I used to use the gui a lot. Nowadays I'm trying to find anything to still use Pd-extended and a decent gui.
All the best,Sumidero.
Debian Stretch on Lenovo T450i, Lexicon Omega.

About one year ago I had the same experience with Pd-extended 0.43 on Debian Squeeze. GUI animations like scopes and automatically moving sliders were fairly expensive. But I attributed it to my hardware, because I had used Pd-E 0.43 with Debian Squeeze on an older computer with no such problem. I guessed it could be an issue with the graphic card driver for my newer laptop. I never sorted it out, because I found that Pd-E 0.43 and 0.44 with Kubuntu / Xubuntu worked well and I stayed with Xubuntu 12.04.
