I'm trying to open a video or image using Gem but it doesn't load. I get the following output from the Ubuntu terminal:

/home/username/Art/Finished Artwork/2009/Portrait/drawing.png: Not a TIFF or MDI file, bad magic number 20617 (0x5089).

And in the Pd window I get:

error: GEM: Unable to load image: /home/username/Art/Finished Artwork/2009/Portrait/drawing.png

I once managed to successfully load an image but I'm not sure why it's not working now.

Any takers as to why it might not be working?

Has anyone else had this problem?

(only guessing, but take out the space between "finished" and "artwork" or use, underscore _ and) use a tiff or jpg.

gems imageloader unfortunately does not take png.

Thanks, changing it to .jpg worked perfectly.

However, in this tutorial they used a .png http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData/GEMImagesMoviesAndVideo Is this tutorial correct in its use of pngs?

I suppose youre talking about [pix_image]

works fine with .png here.

That's very odd! Despite being able to load jpgs I still get this error when loading pngs:

I'm assuming that there's a library or codec that's broken somewhere. I've reinstalled pd/gem a few times to try and fix this problem. Does anyone else have any ideas to what it could be?

Still can't work out why movies and pngs wont load. I'm really lost at the moment as to why this could be happenening. Aside from the magic number error (I've tried loads of my own and downloaded files) there's no other indication or errors.

Any help is really appreciated

hmmm.... surprised to find out pngs do work at all, actually.

i ever only had success with tiffs and jpgs on osx and win running pd-extended.

i noticed, movies can be tricky through their codecs. [pix_movie] on both os' i find the most reliable video being encoded to .mov (photo-jpeg codec).

Thanks for the tip. I tried loading .mov .avi .wmv and even feeding in capture from my webcam with no success

One thing to note is that I keep getting this error

pix_texture: not using client storage

Could this be significant?
