Can anyone think of a cheap USB foot pedal with a reasonable resolution that I can use to feed (at least 127 steps) of data into Pd Linux. MIDI is fine but second resort.

I know I can go into the arduino route and hack anything. Something which I intend to do sometime when I figure out my rigging needs, but until then I keep putting off using my feet and for the meantime would love to have something to play with that's durable and convenient enough to lug around!

What about a cheap car-game controller?
That way, you'd get the pedal as well as a couple of other good controllers, all in a single plug'n'play module.

i saw a guy play live a couple of years ago using a flight simulator controller. it sounded good, but more importantly, it looked super cool.

Yes, the Game controller is a great suggestion. But it is imperative the device works under GNU/linux. I guess class compliancy is a feature well covered under linux, but I need to be sure about the device, blah blah blah.

So I'm thinking to just to go for this:

http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/FCV100.aspx it's about £30 in the UK (and around $20 in US (unbelievable how they rip the pound off like that)) and connect it's cv output into an arduino. That way I get valuable arduino experience and a nice little starter piece too

If you're going for the Arduino in any case, you could probably use just the pedal out of a game-controller.

They're all just pots inside.

I bought 'broken' wah pedals on ebay and used the pots as voltage dividers... Also, It is super easy to just rewire a volume pedal.

I've never had a problem with any game controller under linux. USB ones in particular usually just show up to the OS as a standard HID game controller and work without issues.
