for a long time, i have been using 'cut everything into 16 equal sized chunks and then rearrange them' sample slicers. however, unless you use really even 4/4 loops, the end result never sounds really good.

so today i made a couple of abstractions that let me visually choose which sections of a loop i want to trigger.

the first is [breakpoint-maker], which you can use to line up your sample cut points and create a message box with all your cut-point data.

and then the second is a little player abstraction called [smp-slice] that allows for pitched playback and sequencing of the sample sections.

much nicer and cleaner sample cutting for sure.

(edit - just added a little 5ms envelope to the player to avoid some clicks)

I really like the breakpoint editor also. I wonder.....there was a thread a while back about using bonk to detect transients and writing that info into a message box, as part of a rudimentary Recycle

Could this somehow be combined so that bonk does the ground work and you can fine tune the slices using the editor...?

indeed very cool patch.
i wander if it's possible to set the pitch just for a certain slice not the whole sample. for example just change the pitch of a snare slice from the offspring example... just a thought.

here is a bonk~ed version. just need to do some stuff with the table storage so that i can insert or delete sections i don't want, and it is good to go i reckon.

honestly never thought bonk~ would work so well for this, but i'm blown away. as long as you use loops with fairly well defined beats, it's great.

I did something with bonk~ a little while ago. Here's what I can remember of what it involved....

Two tables, aSample and aIndex, load a sound into aSample
Play aSample into bonk~ (adjusting params as desired) using tabread4~ and line~. no need to loop.

Each time a 'bonk' occurs: sample the line~ output (to get your 'position' or 'index') using snapshot~
write index value to aIndex with tabwrite(not tabwrite~)
advance a counter at the right inlet of tabwrite object.

To play back slices, use tabread(not tabread~) to get a start(n) position and end(n+1, n+ whatever) position from aIndex, pack them up, and feed them to tabread~. Alternatively: use line~, tabread4~ and some math to make a pitch-variable version.

I'll dig it up or make a new example when I am done playing with my new drumset.

would be ok on linux or in 0.39 extended, but the gui has gotten even SLOWER in 0.40.3-extended for mac. i think the redraw would take too long to make it really worthwhile. but i'll give it a go today and see how it goes. i have an old zoomable-array patch here i can modify.

arse its meant to be quicker in this version. Is that one of Hans's test releases? hmmm there is the [cooled~] object from the unauthorized lib off the top of my head...that does zooming, but i guess its still using tcl/tk

I've been having loads of fun with this patch...also really well put together. Would make a good educational patch

no zoom i'm sorry. it was way too much hassle. zooming on the waveform is easy enough to do, but then you have to scale the slice selection and...arrghh, not worth the trouble.

but instead, i added a bit of a nicer envelope, to pretty much stop all clicks; improved and simplified the editing of the bonk-detected slices; added volume control to the slice-player; added a 3-part polyphonic slice player so that you can sequence drumloops or melodies and not cut off the decay of each beat when it finishes;

and just now, i made a nice little drill and bass demo.

hope i'm not pushing my luck attaching a 800kb file to this forum. if it's too much, someone plz let me know. cheers.

'number of slices' is something i should incorporate too.

i have made a similar patch to recgnize slice but i used fiddle~ instead bonk~, so i could detect monophonic note, it was just a proof of concept, first hit target to analyze sound and play to play it quantized ( in fact i play it half tempo )

I'm quiet new to Pd (using it for 1month now) and i am the happy owner of a 40h kit monome.

Want to do things the OPEN way... so using Pd.
I'm discovering new things everytime i have spare time to hook on Pd.

As a first exercice, i made a beat-composer-with-realtime-slicing for my monome (no ui though, since this was my first project). I succeeded, even if the patches are so awfully bloated that i would be ashamed to put it on this forum. But it does what i want If anyone wants to have a look at it anyway, i might post it in another thread.

Anyway, i wanted to do an MLR-style app to play with my monome.
I didn't know where to start.

Thanks to you Hardoff, i think i might be able to reach my goals, with your slice player and my time and monome interface abstracts...
