Hi everyone, for my final year at university I plan on creating an on screen Drum Pad, where the sounds will be generated by PD and the user interface will be done in Processing, these will then communicate with OSC. I'm new to both and have been having a hard time getting anything done.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any tutorials/guides that relate specifically to this, or on creating drum kit sounds (Hi-hat, snare, bass etc.) that I could use for help. Also any information on using OSC to bring them together would be much appreciated!

PD has a nice set of tutorials in the Help Browser. Go to Manuals > PdDrums > drumcenter-01.pd and upward. Cheetomoskeeto and morefun4art on YouTube have some amazing videos on PD.

I've been going through the tutorials by Cheetomoskeeto and they're definitely helping. Wasn't aware of the tutorials in the help browser and i'll check out morefun4art, thanks!

One thing I've found about making a kick is resetting the phase to 0.5, it seems to give a little extra something. Also, Obiwannabe from this forum has the most badass, awesome set of tutorials on sound design. Some of them get very, very heavy, but they taught me how to make realistic metal sounds, which with a bit of tweaking may be able to make a pretty realistic hat, maybe even a ride or crash.

Is there any chance you could show me what you mean with the kick?

I've gone through some of Obiwannabe's tutorials and managed to get one to work and produce a sound similar to a kick drum (although he says it could be a snare or hihat).

I think the majority of things i'm looking at are over-complicating what I need to do as I need a basic way of creating a set of generic drum sounds. Similar to what defaultxr posted in this thread http://puredata.hurleur.com/sujet-9209-simplest-way-create-drums which I used to create the snare but the bass seems to generate a constant noise that I cant hear.

Here's a basic kick from the tutorial. See the message box in the middle, connected to the cold inlet of [osc~]? Change that to 0 and listen to the difference. This is because the right inlet controls the phase of the [osc~].

I'm going to look through Obi's tutorials for bells now in hopes of finding something I can alter to create crash/ride. I will no doubt be returning!

crash is hard to synthesize.

I had more success once i started layering a few voices to get a fuller sound, but it's still very hard to get it sounding right.

The cymbal patch is pretty nice. Can I ask, what is [diysgn~] doing, exactly? Is it just out putting a saw wave?

Your cymbal was nice, there was a lot to it mind which was quite intimidating. I've decided to scrap cymbals and just put in two toms as I'm getting near the deadline. Do you guys know of a basic way to create one that allows me change to some values for variation of sounds?

I'm using OSC, if I want to trigger a bang from a button press in a Processing sketch could I just use udpreceive - unpackOSC - then the bang? I dont have suitable code in my sketch at the moment to test it out.
