Is it possible to detect whether edit mode is active?

Basically what I'm trying to do is use the qwertyuiop keys to toggle on and off different sounds (q multiplies audio signal by 1, then pressing q again will multiply the signal by 0). I have the toggling working already, but I'd like to be able to add new objects in edit mode... The problem is that [key] still detects keys during edit mode, which could result in unwanted toggling of sounds.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

It will not tell you which mode you are in, but as long as you know which mode you started in, and only use hotkeys to change modes, this will do the trick.

A couple of things to note:

1. This was made for Mac OS X, so the hotkey combination is "command-e", this might be different on a different OS (in which case, simply change the Meta_L [route] argument to whatever you use instead of "command".

2. It recognizes the combination of "command" followed by "e", so if you simply press "command", release, and then press "e" it will still trigger.

Unfortunately, it looks like the 1 = enable editmode, 0 = toggle editmode weirdness remains, so this still won't tell you if you're in edit mode or not.

That said, it will more reliably trigger a toggle than my key-combination catcher (edit_mode_detector.pd).

I'd say the best way to use it is to assign a hotkey, since you can't very well click a bang or message when in edit mode. For example, to make 'e' the hotkey for editmode on my system:

[key]
|
[sel 101]
|
[; pd-this_patch.pd editmode 0(

You can send the bang from [sel] to a toggle object in order to keep track of what mode you are in, assuming you know what mode you started in and don't accidentally use the default hotkey combination.

If you plan on using the editmode message in more than one place you may want to use the following (as suggested in ydebutee's link):

[r pd-this_patch.pd]
|
[route editmode]
|
**
I remembered reading that and tried it out to see if it works. I seem to get nothing out of the [receive]. So the hotkey is probably the best way to do it.**

I meant that selecting Edit from the menu or pressing cmd/cntl+e doesn't send the editmode message to the receive. I think that would be ideal for situations like this.

I misunderstood.

I agree, menu and hotkey should both send editmode messages.

Until then, the above patch isn't of much use to me, as it's not worth the trouble of trying to learn a new hotkey just for one performance patch (I would inevitably revert to the default from time to time).
