Along with the examples included in Pd (By the way, did you install Pd, or Pd-extended), Obiwannabe's (http://obiwannabe.co.uk/) tutorials are quite good. Another well done tutorial is available here: http://en.flossmanuals.net/PureData .

I've also found it very edifying to download and examine the brilliant work of some of the people on this forum as well. Check out the Patch forum for starters.

How many other Linux users are there on this forum ? I sometimes get the feeling that most people on the forum are using Pd in Windows or MacOSX, but I'm not sure....

pd-extended is (so far) based on pd-0.40, while 64bit support without brokenness only works in pd-0.41+ (and many externals will need fixing for 64bit, I imagine) - this means there is no 64bit pd-extended (yet).

I'm totally new to digital audio production, so PD has been cool for learning some of the fundamentals about sound synthesis (like, what's an oscillator? what happens when you add two oscillators together?).

Some occasional frustration when I can't figure out if things don't work because they don't work, or because I typed a flag in caps at the command line and that sort of thing. It's all a big adventure, though, and I'm learning a lot at the end of the day.

if i download it directly from the webpage and install with gdebi, then i get "/Gem.pd_linux: libmpeg.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" ....well, gem.pd_linux is definetly there. (or is libmpeg.so.1 the problem?)

i also tried "sudo apt-get install puredata", it only installs vanilla, but i need the libraries!

if i do it with synaptics, audio doesn't seem to work and it doesn't show up in the menu. if i start it by typing "pd", i get no error messages. but if i tell a single .pd-file to open with pd, gem doesn't work again.

i'm confused, i hope my text wasn't as confusing and you could understand.
is there a linux-noob-proof way of installing, or should i maybe try with hardy 8.4 or another distribution? thanks

DO AT YOUR OWN RISK
You could try adding these repositories to your etc/apt/sources.lst :

#pd-extended repo
deb http://otherside.servebeer.com/ubuntu intrepid main
deb-src http://otherside.servebeer.com/ubuntu intrepid main

And then install pd-extended from synaptic.
I did and it is working much better now, not perfect but it is usable.

I've been trying to find where I got this info from but can't seem to find it, otherwise I'd give you the links to it.

good luck.

albesans way gave me the best results so far, i even found the source, it's in the "OtherSide APT" next to the download of pd-extended intrepid at http://puredata.info/downloads

but i still got the same problems. i guess pd-extended just isn't finished for intrepid so far. could you tell me, if pd-extended shows up somewhere in your applications menue? and do you sometimes have problems with gem as well? or is it just me?

sidenote: i installed pd-extended on another machine with debian lenny running, by using these repository sources: http://puredata.info/docs/faq/debian
and it works quite perfect. unfortunately the intrepid-link there gives just a 404

What are exactly your problems on your ubuntu installation?

What happens if you run pd from a terminal?

What messages do you get if you run pd in verbose mode?

If you want to have pd in your menu right click the main menu icon on the top left hand corner and select edit menus. Navigate to the section where you want to have pd and add it there.

I remember having trouble with pd on ubuntu for lack of codecs and for having some video components installed with default parameters.
I did compile some of them myself and that helped quite a lot.

Again I'm sorry to be so vague but this was a while a go and I didn't document the process.

hope this is of help
