A collection of many of the messages you can send to Pd to do dynamic patching and other stuff. There are more messages hidden in the tcl source code, but these are the most important:

@lacuna It was very good, and I have used it a lot for switching pages of faders, but [donecanvasdialog( returned the parent to edit mode in Pd 0.49 which was a pain.....
I fixed it using [coords( as well in the message, but actually just using [coords( for this is better because using both causes other problems on the first send (Pd 0.50 onwards)..... gop_switch_coords.pd

Do the examples in the zip file from 5 years ago still work in the latest version of Pd? I'm getting the errors below when I try '5.examples/2.create_new_abstract.pd'. I'm running Pd v0.52.2 under Windows 7 SP1 (64-bit). (Please don't ask why I'm still running Windows 7!)

@dfkettle Most do, all but the top message there is still valid. pd once again has dynamic patching in its help files, open the help browser and navigate to Pure Data/5.reference/pd-messages.pd. [iemguts/receivecanvas] and [r pd] connected to print will help you discover messages you can send to [iemguts/sendcanvas], [s pd] or a named canvas. Browsing your patch files in a text editor and the pd file format ref are also helpful, and I recently posted a useful abstraction for dynamic patching, removes the need for referring to the file format ref/patches to find out object info and connection messages, look.

Edit: As too creating an abstraction dynamically like this, the easiest way I know of to do this these days is too send the stuff to a subpatch and then send the [savetofile( message to the subpatch. Not perfect but it works, [look] uses this technique, it copies your selection to a subpatch in the abstraction, sends [savetofile( to the subpatch and then opens that saved file into a text and prints it to the log window. If you use this method you probably would also want to edit the #N canvas message of the saved file to delete the 6th field (the name of the subpatch) and change the 7th field from 0 to what ever font size you want the abstraction to use, simple enough to automate.

Thanks. I was just looking at the examples to try and understand them, assuming they would still work. I'm guessing that some change was made to Pd since they were posted here 5 years ago that caused some things to break. One of the risks of relying on undocumented features, of course. There's nothing in particular I want to do at the moment, except to get a better understanding of how dynamic patching works.

There is a little mistake,
the description of a subpatch goes from a "canvas" to a "restore" , not from a restore to a restore. After a "restore", you go back to the patch that contains the subpatch, and you can add objects and wires.

Also I think that color parameters are now saved in hex format (html/css), which is far more easy to use.

If someone have an account, it might be nice to update this link?

I've made a few patches that use the pd file format feathures.

This one loads selected parts of a pd file.

And this one converts what you patch into dynamic patching instructions.

They don't handle most of gui and data structures objects.
