Clone index starts at 0...... unless you have specified otherwise.
When you pass a message into [clone] the first integer routes the message to the appropriate clone..... and it is stripped from the message received by that clone.
So if you send into [clone] the message [2 3 4( then the message [3 4( will be received at the inlet of clone 2.
But maybe you only have clones 0-4.... ?

@svanya With [file which] it will search [declare -path], it searches all paths which pd is aware of at the time of running. The other three only follow the paths which you feed it, I am unaware of anyway to get a list of the paths that pd searches, so you either do it manually or upgrade too 52 so you can use [file]. Dealing with clone is simple since the first argument to clone is the abstraction, just needs a simple tweak.

If one organizes their abstractions in such a manner that [f $1] always refers to that abstractions "index", one can:

1. more powerfully clone that object as

[clone object 12]

2. add both dynamic sends and receives based on that index:

loadbang
|
f $1
|
[symbol objectname-$1(
|
[s]

and

[r objectname-$1]
|

So each object can then
not only get its [all( and [by-idx( messages but also its [r & s] messages outside of the clone thread, ie external from the clone messages, ex. from a gui, hid, OSC, etc., as [s objectname-$1].

Esp. because, I don't know if you've noticed, but working inside clones can be tricky and is prone to losing changes if you don't save the clone's changes before closing.

3. further, one can then create "2nd level" objects at

[clone parentobject 12 childobject]

Such that inside parent is

[f $1] and [symbol $2].

and all $2's are instances of "childobject".

The benefits of this are:

1. greater cloning flexibility because one can swap out out which clone is used merely by changing the name.

Ex.

1. go into the clone
2. open the child
3. edit the child
4. save it as "child2"
5. exit the clone
6. change [clone parent 12 child] to
   [clone parent 12 child2]
   and all of the clone thread will be updated accordingly.

Afterward:

I have yet to find a way to send messages into the clone without editing it, though that feature would be enormously beneficial, esp. as it applies to changing the clone's objects and parameters.

@svanya You can pass = < | > etc. as arguments to an abstraction....... and therefore into the clones within [clone]....... and use them within [expr].
The problem is that for clones they are always the same, apart from as you say $1.
So you can only create one [expr] from the "extra" arguments.
Because [expr] is an object that can only happen at creation time.

So the answer is that you can set the [expr] for all clones...... but not per clone.

I think you would have to place all the expressions you might want within the abstraction and then [route] the internal data through the desired [expr] using $1.

Of course you can create the set of [expr] 's to choose from using the clone arguments if you wish..... a bit messy and unnecessary though.

The window is inside clone, so it will process the window on each grain.

But replacing it with a hanning window, yes it should be possible, It would probably require a few steps, but too tired to dive in atm.

Changing number instances on clone dynamically is not possible as far as I know. But you can approach it in a different manner. You can basically just set clone to the maximum number of voices you would like. Lets say you set it for 64 voices. and then you can do this:

This is just an example made with a subpatch, you would of course need to use the actual clone object.

What it does:
If the nr-of-grains parameter is larger than the clone/grain number, then turn on audio for this clone/grain. So if you set the first argument on clone to 64, then you have 64 grains available, but if you only set the nr-of-grains parameter to 48, only the first 48 grains will have audio turned on and only 48 grains will be played and processed. It works fine, I did it in my version, as a workaround, since I was not able to change clone arguments dynamically.

I've seen this idea come up quite a bit recently, so i thought I would throw out what I learned from making Virgo.

One way to dynamically create creation arguments is to pass the name of the abstraction you want, an id (identifying the parent abstraction), and the number of times you want to create it to a container abstraction all as creation arguments.

Then inside the container, clone that main abstraction that many times using the id as the third argument.

So...[clone absname numTimes Id] or put more specifically\

[clone $1 $2 $3]

then inside the abs clone add:

loadbang
f $1 (the clone index)
f $2 (the main object id)

and a named dynamic send such that

[$2-$1-name(

So, on receiving, you get all of the sends as

the id - the idx of the clone - and the name.

If you do it this way, writing the names (though standardized) for sends such catch~ or throw~ become available.

@whale-av $0 is mostly used to guaranty locality in case a patch is opened multiple times, so there is no collision between used names.

Another way to tackle this is to use the $0 of the main patch throughout, hand it down to abstractions and clones and there use counting numbers for the individual clones/abstractions.

So for abstractions:
[abstraction $0 1], [abstraction $0 2] and so on
and inside:
[array define $1-$2-array].

For clones:
[clone abstraction 16 $0]
and inside:
[array define $2-$1-array].

You can then even access the clones/abstractions from outside because you know $0 already. In the mainpatch:
[array get $0-1-array] for example.

It will work if the [openpanel] is inside the cloned abstraction.
But $0 in each cloned array name is going to be a different value from that of the container patch..... and they can change on reopening the patch containing the clone if other patches are open.
The only way I can think of to reference the $0 array name from outside is to grab the $0 values from the clones and modify the [soundfiler] message accordingly....... referencing the current value.
It can be done but will need some feedback from the clone as the sound file is loaded.

Try this...... eg2.zip if you need to reference the clone from outside using its $0 value.
