Thanks very much for sorting it. The patch works really well with some microtonal tunings. My intention was to record some miniatures to demonstrate its usefulness but Audacity is giving me a hard time at the moment (something to do with my VSTHost set up).

Replacing "random 9 /+2" with "random 9/-11" produces a different harmony. as the randomly generated notes are now an octave lower. So for example, C3, E3 would become E2, C3.

Hello,

This is a sketch for practicing with Geometry objects in GEM that I made for my kids.

Here is the sketch.

and here is the output for some dummy values on one shape.

This is supposed to be done under supervision to ensure that the most is obtained out of the sketch but I left in a list of definitions for what the objects do so that it can be referenced without supervision.

I found this helpful for introducing my kids to shape manipulation since we are currently starting Geometry in Math class for my oldest.

I also use it as a reference for when I need to copy and paste shapes for other projects.

Hope this helps someone.

I was looking for a video or explanation that showed how to prepare data for usage in Pure Data from a CSV File but I could't find any. So I figured it out myself after playing around with the example sketchs and got something that worked for me.

Since there were no easily found videos on the community or YouTube, I created an explanation for how to prepare data from a CSV for usage in Pure Data with the {text define] and the [text get] objects.

The data is from a Mechanical Ventilator that was in 5 columns, 1 column for a timestamp and 4 columns of data for each timestamp. This was formatted as an excel CSV and manipulated from here.

This video explains how to convert the data from a CSV into a TXT file in order for Pure Data to accurately read the data.

This video explains the sketch in a general sense.

Here is the sketch I used, I only used the GEM Library with the basic install of Pure Data to keep externals to a minimum.
FileReader.pd

- This is the final Sketch in Action

I hope this helps someone down the line. Good luck!

The rich kids use Mac. Most use Windows. And Linux...? While it barely exists for consumers in the West (I'm a 13+ year Linux user btw, and I have no plans to switch to a commercial OS, but I'm honest about Linux's market share), it doesn't exist at all over here.

There seems to be an assumption that commercial software is always better than free... which is often true... so it's "why would I deal with a smaller feature set and less elegant UI in, say, GIMP when cracked PhotoShop is a few clicks away?" (I do use GIMP myself.) There are exceptions, though (e.g. AFAIK there's nothing like SuperCollider in the commercial sphere). So I like these edge cases where FLOSS ends up being more broadly usable.

Useful link, thanks. It gives me a sense of what's realistic for undergraduates, at least.

One thing that I will do in the next cycle is alternate between a lecture one week and a workshop the next week. Students can read an outline first; then the lecture will fill in details; and then they get their hands on it the next week. This may also cut back on the number of assignments. I found in the past that many students got behind on homework and then felt that they couldn't catch up.

I also think I'm going to pull back from trying to get the students to put together some parts of the patches independently. Students who are really interested in it will do it anyway; students who aren't just get the idea that "I can't do this."

I second that. I've read the Max version, years ago, and it is a very good book.

That's good to know. I've just checked a couple of Chinese online shops and this title is available (remarkably!) but roughly twice as expensive -- assuming 6 or 7 RMB : 1 USD, I'd have expected around 360 RMB but I find it for 719 RMB... jeez... maybe my department can spring for it.
