id like to get a pd set to 'read' a html page on the web. ive got it reading .txt files locally, but wondered if there's a plugin that allows pd to access files online.

what im trying to achieve is to display words from webpages in gem, ideally by reading them straight from the sites themselves. failing this, is there anything out there (apple script etc?) that can convert html pages into .txt files through a script, i.e. not manually.

e.g. if i add some words to a blog, can i somehow get those words into pd?

ive seen this done using flash, and possibly max or processing, so hoping its possible with pd!

    thanks

hi, does anyone know why i might be getting this error message:

    error: [pix_filmDarwin]: GEM: pix_movie: Couldn't open the movie file: 8.divxÙÿ?h? (-2020)
... you might be able to track this down from the Find menu.
    [pix_filmDarwin]: GEM: pix_film: Loaded file: /Users/jamessmith/Desktop/fishmarket_master/8.divx with 0 frames (0x0)

im not using pix_movie anywhere in the set, so not sure why its erroring like this, but its making my set crash!

ive tried it with the demo files, and the same happens, tried installing another copy of pd, same thing happens,

    thanks in advance

    Hi,
I would like pd to analyse a .txt file
for example, i have a .txt file with a load of words in, written in sentences etc. and i would like pd to go through the file and recognise when it reads an 'a', 'b', 'c' etc. if it reads an 'a' it would play a sound for example.
Ive done it with numbers before, but even then the numbers need to be a column:

    1
    2
    3
    4
    5
    6
    7

    not 1234567

is it possible for pd to do this? if not, does anyone know of some software / script that will analyse text files and format them into something pd will read?

    thanks

    james

    hello,

i would like pd to read from a text file containing a list of numbers (anything from 10 to 1000 lines maybe), and display those numbers in number boxes for use in pd (sequencing, gem etc).

i know there is the facility to read text files, and display the results in the pd window, but i cant get them into number boxes. im guessing we could use metro to go through the list line by line?

any help / example patched gratefully received!!

    thanks

    james.

    hello forum,

is it possible to get gem to 'draw' like an etch-a-sketch? i would like to have a series of numbers that control things like left/right and up/down.

ive looked at particles but they seem random, and they die. can you have one 'line' that starts at a a given point and 'grows' like using an etch-a-sketch?

    thanks

Is it possible to blur objects in Gem? either feather the edges, or create a 'trail' left behind by moving shapes? preferable controllably

if someone can help, or direct me to a plug in etc that would be cool

    Thanks
    James.

    Hello,

I'm really interested in the potential of PD and would love to get my head round it.
I have a basic knowledge of programming (from a college course a few years ago), but am keen to learn more to explore the possibilities of the program.

I have downloaded the pd extended file, and instealled the packages within. I have opened up the tutorial/demo files, and everything seems to be working fine...
however, there are a few basics that im struggling to get my head round. Firstly, i would like to use Gem (which i have downloaded and installed) but am unsure how to 'call' it into PD as a library.

Running OS 10.2.8, PD runs through Terminal. I am new to Terminal, and dont know how to load commands with it. If i type 'pd - lib Gem' into the existing terminal window that loads PD, and hit enter, nothing happens. If i go to FILE/NEW COMMAND and type the message, a new window loads with some information, which ends with 'logout [Process completed]' which i presume means it hasnt loaded Gem into PD, as opening Gem tutorial files gives no results.

To cut a long story short (!) I would basically like to know how to load Gem into Puredata! I think my problem lies with using Terminal on mac osX, so if there is anyone who can lend a hand and give me some guidance, I would be most grateful.

I am excited about what these programs can bring to my work, and cant wait to get stuck in!

    Many thanks

I am using an ibook running OS 10.2.8
i downloaded pd-0.36-extended2-MacOSX.dmg (from which i installed all of the packages)
    and
gem-0.90.0-OSX-G3-bin.tar.gz (i placed the two files - the library and the readme, into: mycomputer/library/Pd/Externals

thanks, i'll give it a go.
i guess if its reading html there's a lot of characters that will be unuseable etc
but perhaps with some careful html coding, or if there's a way to only call up frames as opposed to complete pages, it could work.
ill look into netcat as well.
if i have any luck, ill post back on this thread
    thanks
