Table-using Abstraction can be used multiple times in one patch
@Maggie17 $0 will be different in every abstraction. That is useful ...... making it local.
But if you want to look at it from another patch or abstraction you can't ...... the other abstraction doesn't know its value. It is looking for its own $0 value....... cannot find it...... hence the message.
Probably best to give your abstraction an argument........ [abstr 1]...... [abstr 2]..... and then use $1-meight for your table.
Then you will have 1-meight ........ 2-meight...... etc. and you will be able to read them from your other patches.
You can then use $0 ...... or $1 for messages inside your abstraction....... but always $1 if you want to send or receive a message from outside.
Of course..... if you put a [receive $1-mess] in a patch that has 5 as its first argument then if you want to send to it from another patch you must use [send 5-mess]..... and to use tabplay to read table $1-meight from outside the abstraction you will need to use [tabplay 5-meight].....
David.
P.S. the error you are seeing though, is coming from your second [read -resize........( message.
$0 has no meaning in a message box...... and becomes simply "0"....... and you don't have a table 0-meight...... although you could if you wish.
Your first part...... bang >> [$0] >> [message with $1( puts the value of $0 into the $1 in the message and is the correct way to get $0 into a message....... and will get $1 into a message too...... bang >> [$1] >> [message $1(
See this....... dollar.zip ..... small change made..
It is hard...... but great when you finally understand...... so worth the work.....
Fresh Install, "Start Here" Errors
@Artpunk Yes, Pd doc has changed for Vanilla.
You will need to download Pd Extended from here....... http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-extended
Do not install it, or you might cause problems for your current installation....
Look for the doc folder, name it Doc-extended or ? and copy it somewhere.... Desktop......?
Add the path to the new folder to your current Pd preferences.
Not everything will work, unless you install all the necessary externals through "Deken".... but most of it will be fine.
David.

Opening a PD patch as a subpatch using [openpanel]
@whale-av WOW!!! The 'rack' system is awesome, it's such a great way to store information Unfortunately [initbang] isn't working for me. I'm running PD vanilla on an RPI 3 with l2ork+extended library paths, but when I try loading [iemguts/initbang] / [initbang] PD can't seem to find them. Which is strange since l20rk and pd-extended both have working [initbang] objects, however their builds aren't stable enough to load this patch. I've been looking for the external location, however I could only manage to find the help file
I substituted [initbang] for just a [bang] and I was able to see how the 'rack' system works, but I feel like I'm gonna need [initbang] or some sort of workaround to get this working.
Looking ahead, the final step that would make this an effect tool would be an 'open' button in the graph-to-parent, one that would just 'open' the window/abstraction that the effect was in so you can edit parameters
Thanks again for all the help

Purr Data rc5
many thanks for sharing the informative post.
Pd-extended was built to be an easy-to-install and thorough assembly of available libraries, extensions, and documentation. Unfortunately it is no longer maintained. Say it again:
Pd-Extended Has Been Abandoned And Discontinued. The Last Release Is Several Years Old. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK (Or Rather Not)
Pd-extended has two main goals: provide a standard collection of libraries and distribute core modifications to Pd itself. Providing a package that includes many libraries not only means that they are easy to use, but also acts as a standard platform so that patches can be used across many computers easily. Pd-extended includes most of the libraries from the pure-data source code repository. It is generally the most complete assembly of all available libraries, extensions, and documentation.
In terms of modifications to the core, Pd-extended aims to feel like a native app on GNOME GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows. It also includes a number of community-added features like experimental string support and a visual design meant to improve readability.
The aim is to keep it completely compatible with Pd-vanilla. That said, it is possible that incompatibilities will be introduced during the development process, these should be reported as bugs. Pd-vanilla is not always compatible with Pd-extended, though, since Pd-extended has some extra features with Pd-vanilla does not have.
fixed autorepeat suppression for [key], [keyup], and [keyname] on Windows (thanks to Aayush Surana)
fixed for changing the midi api under linux and a few other fixes for OSS midi handling (thanks to Pranay Gupta)
fixed menu item in Pd console for OSX
added a stop-gap shortcuts file for (most) current keybindings
fixed bug handling certain encodings in filenames under Windows (thanks to Alv_ro on the Pd Forum for reporting it)
split out l2ork version from s_stuff.h to make development easier
fixed regression with Windows when socket connection gets reset (e.g., when quitting from the terminal with <ctrl-c>)
made autopatch y-offset distance settable in the Preferences dialog
fixed bug where array name wasn't getting updated
ported [drawtext] from Pd Vanilla
enabled keyboard entry for [drawsymbol]

Errors in building pd-extended on Odroid C2
Hello,
I get errors, likely related to alsa, when building from source pure data extended
(the last version - ) on ODROID C2, running Ubuntu 16.04.
To build I simply followed the instructions listed on the puredata.info
(cd pure-data/packages/linux_make and then make instal)
I think I
to have all the dependencies correctly installed.
Here the last lines of the build output

I there anyone who managed to install pd-extended on ODROID C2 and
can suggest a way to solve this issue?
Thanks in advance!
Volume Control (dB)
@Spyros ..........Sorry Spyros...... I meant inside the program.......
In the real world it is of course a true measurement relative to the power of the smallest discernible sound........ which I remember being a cricket at 100M? in a quiet environment.....
And please let us know whether the patch actually gives you the true response on your meter!
David
udpsend and receive
@toddak to fix the missing dependancies run this in terminal.............
sudo apt-get update
(and then)
sudo apt-get upgrade -f
In fact you should do all of these from time to time....... (not the bits in brackets)
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get upgrade -f (fix missing dependencies)
sudo rpi-update (firmware and kernel)
It is most likely that you need pulse audio for Pd to run....... I think that it is essential....
and maybe the dejavu fonts (uncertain)........ and so the command above should solve your problem and Pd should then run....
ALSO...... if it will still not run once the missing dependancies have been installed you should check that you are running an armhf system:...........
Run this command in terminal:
readelf -A /proc/self/exe | grep Tag_ABI_VFP_args
If the Tag_ABI_VFP_args tag is found, then you're running on an armhf system. If nothing is returned, then it's armel. To show you an example, here's what happens on a Raspberry Pi running the Raspbian distribution:
pi@raspberrypi:~$ readelf -A /proc/self/exe | grep Tag_ABI_VFP_args
Tag_ABI_VFP_args: VFP registers
This indicates an armhf distro, which in fact is what Raspbian is. On the original, soft-float Debian Wheezy distribution, here's what happens:
pi@raspberrypi:~$ readelf -A /proc/self/exe | grep Tag_ABI_VFP_args
Nothing returned indicates that the kernel is armel.
