timing events in pd
I am working on a piece that will turn on and off multiple motors at certain time based on certain variables.
What I'm trying to do is sequence like this:
sequence 1:
button is pressed
motor 1:
start at min 00: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 7 - 10 sec
motor2:
start at min 01: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 5 - 11 sec
motor3:
start at min 04: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 3 - 13 sec
motor4:
start at min 06: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 7 - 10 sec
motor5:
start at min 08: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 5 - 12 sec
motor6:
start at min 10: random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 4 - 10 sec
all motors run
when button is pressed again (button count = 2):
sequence 2 starting:
motor 1:
continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 5 - 10 sec
stop after 01 min
motor 2: continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 3 - 12 sec
stop after 04 min
motor 3: continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 7 - 12 sec
stop after 10 min
motor 4: continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 3 - 8 sec
stop after 16 min
motor 5: continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 5 - 16 sec
stop after 18 min
motor 6: continue random pulse(ON time of 35 ms) every 7 - 10 sec
-- now only motor 6 is running >> button pressed>> last motor that running(motor 6) is stops.
sequence 3:
all motors pulsing together every 7 seconds for 2 minutes
after 2 minutes elapsed all motor stops.
how can I implements the above in PD?
how is possible to timing events without using metro rather something more accurate?
Thanks

It works for me, but you certainly need to refresh the [number 15( message AFTER create the [pd boid] subpatches creation.
Also, here is a better version using [clone] object that has been part of puredata and makes the design more convienient.
(Note that boids Gem examples need [poltocar] object fom cyclone to work well)
Hi, your patch works fine, the boids move correctly, but when I increase their number for example from 15 to 115, also doing the "refresh after..." as you said, the boids increase but stay still, they don't move.
Now, when I open your patch, I get these errors:

when I try to type a number inside a number box it is not working. The only way for changing the numbers is by clicking the mouse and scrolling. There is no wy to type into number boxes?
OK.
If you create a button or toggle, you might notice that:
- If you are not in edit mode, clicking on the object produces the output.
- If you are in edit mode, clicking on the object selects it but does not trigger output.
- If you are in edit mode, ctrl- clicking on the object produces output.
Number boxes behave the same way. Not in edit mode, you can click and type a number. In edit mode, ctrl-click allows you to type. I just confirmed that this is true in PlugData as well as the vanilla Pd GUI.
(On Mac, cmd- instead of ctrl-.)
In both interfaces, use ctrl-E to toggle between edit and performance modes. In PlugData, the +
icon in the toolbar is dimmed when not editing (AFAICS this is the only way to know which mode you're in).
Edit edit... one minor interface goof in PlugData is that: performance mode, clicking a number box turns the arrowhead blue (so you know it's typeable). In edit mode, ctrl-click does not turn it blue but it's still typeable (I tried it, no problem).

Capacitive sensors/ Connect PD to Arduino
Hello!
I'm quite new using PD. A couple of years ago my friend helped me create capacitive sensors using both PD and Arduino. However, since my old computer got stolen, I'm having a hard time knowing what libraries and setups I need on PD. This is a list of all the errors I get. Please.. help 😅

Building on Windows - works from Git source, not from tarball
I wanted to build PD on Windows 10 to get ASIO support. I failed when I used the "Source" files from the PD website. I succeeded when I used source that I cloned from Github. I followed the same instructions from the wiki both when I failed and when I succeeded. (They are the same as in the manual, just a little more concise.)
I am sharing below my terminal output from the failed build attempts from the downloaded source code (the tar.gz file). Some of these messages suggest that there might be errors in the makefiles. I don't know anything about makefiles, so I can't really interpret the errors. But I did want to pass them along, in case a developer might find them useful. Here you go:

Snail... a pure data patch for slow sounds
Hello there, this seemed an interesting patch, so i unzipped it on a folder and tried to open it but got an unusable display and a string of errors on console, something like this (its not all of it);

s~/r~ throw~/catch~ latency and object creation order
For a topic on matrix mixers by @lacuna I created a patch with audio paths that included a s~/r~ hop as well as a throw~/catch~ hop, fully expecting each hop to contribute a 1 block delay. To my surprise, there was no delay. It reminded me of another topic where @seb-harmonik.ar had investigated how object creation order affects the tilde object sort order, which in turn determines whether there is a 1 block delay or not. Object creation order even appears to affect the minimum delay you can get with a delay line. So I decided to do a deep dive into a small example to try to understand it.
Here's my test patch: s~r~NoLatency.pd
The s~/r~ hop produces either a 64 sample delay, or none at all, depending on the order that the objects are created. Here's an example that combines both: s~r~DifferingLatencies.pd
That's pretty kooky! On the one hand, it's probably good practice to avoid invisible properties like object creation order to get a particular delay, just as one should avoid using control connection creation order to get a particular execution order and use triggers instead. On the other hand, if you're not considering object creation order, you can't know what delay you will get without measuring it because there's no explicit sort order control. Well...technically there is one and it's described in G05.execution.order, but it defeats the purpose of having a non-local signal connection because it requires a local signal connection. Freeze dried water: just add water.
To reduce the number of cases I had to test, I grouped the objects into 4 subsets and permuted their creation orders:
The order labeled in the diagram has no latency and is one that I just stumbled on, but I wanted to know what part of it is significant, so I tested all 24 permuations. (Methodology note: you can see the object creation order if you open the .pd file in a text editor. The lines that begin with "#X obj" list the objects in the order they were created.)
It appears that any time the phasor group is created before the r~, there is latency. Nothing else matters. Why would that be? To test if it's the whole audio chain feeding s~ that has to be created before, or only certain objects in that group, I took the first permutation with latency and cut/pasted [phasor~ 1] and [*~ 44100] in turn to push the object's creation order to the end. Only pushing [phasor~ 1] creation to the end made the delay go away, so maybe it's because that object is the head of the audio chain?
I also tested a few of these permutations using throw~/catch~ and got the same results. And I looked to see if connection creation order mattered but I couldn't find one that did and gave up after a while because there were too many cases to test.
So here's what I think is going on. Both [r~ next] and [phasor~ 1] are the heads of their respective locally connected audio chains which join at [-~]. Pd has to decide which chain to process first, and I assume that it has to choose the [phasor~ 1] chain in order for the data buffered by [s~ next] to be immediately available to [r~ next]. But why it should choose the [phasor~ 1] chain to go first if it's head is created later seems arbitrary to me. Can anyone confirm these observations and conjectures? Is this behavior documented anywhere? Can I count on this behavior moving forward? If so, what does good coding practice look like, when we want the delay and also when we don't?
Save and recall midi settings in a project
I FINALLY made it work, it's now as reliable and foolproof as i can patch it!
I spent quite some time to make it clean and well working, so i'm not sure it will save me time in the end, but i'm sure it can save you some, so please use it! Bear in mind you HAVE to modify it to contain your own audio and midi devices. Their names can be found using audiosettings and midisettings objects.
Each patch containing this one, if correctly modified, will create and send to pd the correct message to tell it to put which device on which "slot" of the audio and midi settings menus.
I also made a patch for audiosettings, which sets the audio interface of your choice, with all the appropriate settings, plus another "plan B" setting in case the main audio interface is missing.
Once properly set up, you only have to worry about plugging your audio and midi devices before launching Pd. What a relief in terms of time and stress, especially in live situations!
Sadly it needs Loopmidi or something similar to work, with as much virtual midi devices as the real ones you'll be using: if one or several devices are missing, the virtual ones will replace them in the midi settings, so it doesn't ruin the order of devices. I named them DUMMYIN\ 1 and DUMMYOUT\ 1 to 5 because i don't have more than 5 midi devices plugged at once. you have to create these DUMMY things in loopmidi to get this patch to work.
(I tried with one dummy midi device in and one dummy out, but it doesn't work if two real midi devices are missing in a row: pd apparently won't let you have twice the same device on consecutive slots)
the next steps would be to make it more user friendly, by sending messages to it, so it can be used in several different projects without being edited inside.
The most convenient solution would be to modify Pd source code to make these settings behave differently, by assigning a UNIQUE number to each device, being plugged or not, or accepting messages that contain the order of devices BY THEIR NAME and not a randomly assigned number... then it would be possible to store a simple midi and audiosettings message in each patch.
