instance specific dynamic patching documentation assistance
@Muology the dyn-abs on the right is just showing what is in the abstraction [dyn-abs]. If you open dyn-abs-test.pd you will see that box on the right is not there and nor is the abstraction [dyn-abs]. If you open dyn-abs.pd you will see that the message [hello abstraction( is not there, it is created when you run the abstraction. Sort of a way to self document things, it all ends up in the screenshot and is clearly labeled. It will make more sense once you learn to read patches.
Open [dyn-abs-test] and create a new object, name it dyn-abs $0
and then open the abstraction by control clicking on it or right clicking and selecting open, you will see that the message is now there, it was dynamically created by dyn-abs-test.pd. On creation the abstraction sends its unique canvas name as set by [namecanvas] to $1register, $1 being the $0 of the patch which the abstraction is in since $0 is the first argument passed to the abstraction. That name goes to the right inlet of the [send] in dyn-abs-test.pd so we can send the message [msg 10 10 hello abstraction( to the canvas of the most recent instance of [dyn-abs] which creates the massage in the abstraction. Normally you would store each abstraction's unique canvas name in something like a [text] or [list store] so you can retrieve the proper canvas name for the instance of the abstraction you desire to alter. Or you could send to pd-dyn-abs and alter all copies of the abstraction at once as David mentioned, this can get very messy very quickly if you are also altering them each individually. Best path depends on what you are trying to do.
iemguts is a library of externals which makes most everything regarding dynamic patching easier, it can be installed with deken by going to the help menu and clicking on "find externals."
Believe the rest was answered more or less? I did start on a dynamic patching tutorial a few days ago but no idea when it will be done, made a good amount of progress so far but need to do all the text. Kind of fun to do, the tutorial itself is dynamically patched.
Difficulty compiling PD for Mac M series architecture - keeps coming out as Intel
Hi all - I'm trying to compile PD for my M1 Mac and I have not been able to figure out how to get this to work. It keeps ending up with an Intel based app even though when I run configure it appears to be set up correctly. Configure gives this output:
pd 0.54.0 is now configured
Platform: Mac OSX
Float size: default
Debug build: no
Universal build: no
Localizations: yes
Source directory: .
Installation prefix: /usr/local
Compiler: gcc
CPPFLAGS: -DNDEBUG
CFLAGS: -mmacosx-version-min=10.6 -ffast-math -fno-finite-math-only -funroll-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -O3 -g -O2
LDFLAGS: -L/usr/local/lib
INCLUDES: -I/usr/local/include
LIBS:
External extension: d_fat
External CFLAGS: -fPIC
External LDFLAGS: -bundle -undefined dynamic_lookup
Deken identifier: darwin-arm64
fftw: no
wish(tcl/tk): default search paths
watchdog: yes
audio APIs: PortAudio
midi APIs: PortMidi
However, when I subsequently run 'make' and then 'make app' the app it generates is an Intel app. I can tell by looking at the app with 'get info' in Finder, or by looking at it in Activity Monitor when it is running and seeing that it is an Intel process. Can somebody please help me make this natively for Mac architecture?
(FYI, I am doing a custom compile because I need to extend the MIDI FIFO size to avoid overflow for my specific use case)
Thanks!
problem creating objects from external iemlib
hi everyone!
I'm trying to run the patch "Ambisonic_2d_example.pd" from the iem_ambi external. While trying to get it to run, I made some changes to the declare statement. You can find the code below..
I installed the externals needed for this patch through deken and I also set the "-lib iemlib" startup flag in PD.
Unfortunately I get the following errors. As you can see PD fails to create some objects (e.g. fadtodb, rbpq, mull~, dsp). These objects seem to all come from the iemlib which is loaded successfully. I have also checked the /externals/iemlib directory.. the four mentioned object-patches are there.
I am running PD on a VM running Debian 11.7 on a M1 MacBook Pro.
I have been trying to solve this for a couple of hours now.. Does anyone know why it's not working?

Having issues with audio preferences and PD freezing up
Maybe 0.52-1 was running using Rosetta2 which is emulating Intel. A compiled external has to be for both the operating system and underlying architecture. Intel mac is x64, and M1/M2 is arm64/aarch64.
you can go look at these https://deken.puredata.info/ - you need ones that say 'Darwin-amd64-32' to run built for M1/M2 Macs .. But lets see the mac lore is they let you keep Rosetta for two versions of Mac OS, so for now you can stick with Rosetta2 (and that means install the Intel Mac version of PD and emulate it, at some point they will release like 13.3 or whatever theyre at (I'm still using mojave) and take it away but hopefully by then the externals you need will be compiled (or you can compile them yourself), otherwise stick with Big Sur or whatever you are on to keep Rosetta2 - I really haven't been paying attention.
ofelia on raspberry pi?
Hi,
I am trying to get ofelia to run on a couple of rpi. Right now I am trying a rpi 3B+ running https://blokas.io/patchbox-os/
I run ofeila with the ofelia-fast-prototyping abs on my mac successfully.
Following install instructions here https://github.com/cuinjune/Ofelia
after running
sudo ./install_dependencies.sh
it ends like this:
detected Raspberry Pi
installing gstreamer omx

gstreamer1.0-omx is already the newest version (1.0.0.1-0+rpi12+jessiepmg).
The following package was automatically installed and is no longer required:
raspinfo
Use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove it.

Thankful for help!
Finding a .dylib required by externals
I'm running Pd-0.52-2 on MacOS Monterey (12.6) and having trouble with externals that I created. When developing/debugging, everything is fine. I have 4 externals with extensions .pd_darwin, each dependent upon a DLL named libo2pd.dylib. With everything in ~/Documents/Pd/externals/, I can start my locally compiled pd-0.52-2.app, and everything works. But if I run a downloaded /Applications/Pd-052-2.app and try to create one of these external objects, I get the message:
/Users/rbd/Documents/Pd/externals/o2ensemble.pd_darwin: dlopen(/Users/rbd/Documents/Pd/externals/o2ensemble.pd_darwin, 0x000A): Library not loaded: 'libo2pd.dylib'
Referenced from: '/Users/rbd/Documents/Pd/externals/o2ensemble.pd_darwin'
Reason: tried: 'libo2pd.dylib' (relative path not allowed in hardened program), '/usr/lib/libo2pd.dylib' (no such file)
o2ensemble o2global
... couldn't create
I get the same results running from the command line, and running from the directory with the .dylib and externals does not make any difference. Note that /usr/lib is protected even using sudo, so even if I could install libo2pd.dylib there, I don't think it's an acceptable solution.
I suspect this problem stems from Apple security policies, but I don't know how Pd searches for .dylibs and there's a lot of ambiguity in documentation and discussions since "libraries" and "paths" are used in multiple ways. I also tried setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH and running from the command line, but that didn't work.
Does anyone know to set up Pd for an external that depends on a DLL?
Trying to understand how to compile PD Externals (static library and Windows)
Hello all,
I have recently stumbled into some problems compiling PD externals. I figured I would post here, it's a two part question
Compiling on/for Windows:
The first, and likely easier question, is I am trying to compile this external for the ES-5 encoder provided by Expert Sleepers for their DC coupled Eurorack interface:
https://github.com/expertsleepersltd/externals/tree/master/pd/es5encoder~
However, when I attempted to run the makefile I am encountering numerous errors that lead me to believe my environment isn't setup for compiling PD externals. Is there somewhere that outlines how to compile an external like this where there is limited/no documentation in the README? I don't know how generic of a process it is and if it's fairly standardized.
Second question:
I have a library that I would like to use with PDParty (iemmatrix) and I need to compile this into a static library to be able to use it on iOS. Is compiling to a static library drastically different than to a dynamic one? Are there limitations design wise that particular libraries might be incompatible with?
Sorry if the wording here is confusing at all. I haven't dealt much with compiling libraries for different platforms so I am a bit lost on some of the basics.
Any help, as always, is greatly appreciated

Hello. I can't get GEM to work on MacOS Catalina (10.15.4). I installed using Help > Find Externals. Here're the errors I get. . . .

Building on Windows - works from Git source, not from tarball
I wanted to build PD on Windows 10 to get ASIO support. I failed when I used the "Source" files from the PD website. I succeeded when I used source that I cloned from Github. I followed the same instructions from the wiki both when I failed and when I succeeded. (They are the same as in the manual, just a little more concise.)
I am sharing below my terminal output from the failed build attempts from the downloaded source code (the tar.gz file). Some of these messages suggest that there might be errors in the makefiles. I don't know anything about makefiles, so I can't really interpret the errors. But I did want to pass them along, in case a developer might find them useful. Here you go:
