Hello,
thanks for the answer, this looks good for sure.
The url inside your link, for the puredata.info page seems erased. But I did suppress the .plist file mentionned. I did not get to manually load the "libdir" library, but now at booting this is the log I get:

Complete noob alert! (installation)
Okay, hello guys. Excited to be here... I've recently become hooked on Pd.
I can do a fair bit with it already but I'm just getting really fed up now that practically every patch I download from someone else contains at least one object or some kind of abstraction I either don't understand or don't have some how.
On Mac OS X PPC 10.4, I've downloaded Pd Extended, but I'm pretty sure I don't have all of these libraries that many of you talk about. (isn't that what Extended is supposed to be all about?) I really want to start working with GEM.
at start up, I always get this in the console. This is bad, no?

Scratching a newly recorded sound???
P.P.S. it is called [vinylcontrol~]
Interesting way of going about positioning;
- relative position; the start is the first cue-point (first tracked timecode where the needle was dropped) and can be reset to the current timecode-position by sending a bang to the third inlet. The end position is the last sane timecode on the record. The position is calculated using (current_position-start_position)/(last_position-start_posit ion), thus giving a range between 0 and 1 between the end position and the relative start position and negative values for positions before the start position.

So, you may have to do a little more math than I thought...
Distortion/compression thing I'm trying to do.
Hi. I'm still kind of a novice at pd, so what I'm trying to might not be a good idea. It doesn't seem to be working any how.
Anyways, I was trying to make a distortion type deal where you select a window in the signal, say .5 to .75 of the absolute value of the signal, or whatever you like, and have it so the signal below that window (say 0 to .5) isn't reduced in amplitude, the signal above that window (.75 to 1) is reduced by a factor of your choice, I'll call it a, a value between 1 and 0, and the signal within the window ramps steadily from no reduction to reduction by a factor of a, so it's smooth.
What I've been doing for this is multiplying the whole signal by a clipped version of the absolute value of the signal that's multiplied and added to such that instead of going from .5 to .75 it goes from 1 to a. So, anything below .5 is multiplied by 1, anything above .75 is multiplied by a, and everything in between is multiplied by something between 1 and a. I thought this would produce a smooth sort of distortion, depending on how much the amplitude is reduced by and the width of the window, but no matter what I do I get a harsher distortion, and there are little rectangular cuts in the peaks that shouldn't be there, unless my logic about all of this is wrong.
This is roughly what's going on.
Signal
|
abs~
|
clip~ .5 .75
|
-~ .5 ( 0 to .25)
|
/~ .25 (0 to 1)
|
*~ -(1 - a) (given a reduction factor of .6 this would be 0 to -.4)
|
+~ 1
And that would result in a range of 1 to .6. And I multiply that by the original signal. I'm just kinda messing around with pd trying to make stuff, so maybe this is just a bad way to do this. Is it just too many operations on the clip to multiply it at the right time?
I can put a patch on this later if you need.
Sample Player
Frank told me to make this tutorial to figure out

Thanks for his help.
If anybody has the same problem. Here is the message he wrote me:

itself, but a tutorial on how to build your own sampler.> What i want to do:

calculations (as: duration(smps) => duration(msec) etc.) become clearer.> - How can i get my keyboard entries into the software?
Use the [keyname] or [key] objects.
> - And lust but not least. How can i get the Patch to act how i would
> like.Just build it! If you get stuck, try to make a patch that illustrates
where you got stuck and send it here. You may want to start with empty subpatches, that divide your
problem/approach into smaller problems/steps. Like first do a
completely empty patch and put some empty subpatches in there:[pd load_file]
[pd get_duration_in_msec]
[pd convert_duration_to_BPM]
[pd get_keypresses]
[pd play_sample]
or similar. Then give your subpatches inlets and outlets and connect
them in order. And last fill in these subpatches with the real patches
one by one, always checking if every subpatch does what it should do.> I know...dumb question you know too.
It's not a dumb question at all. While playing samples isn't exactly
magic, it's also not trivial to do, especially for the first time.
Compiling new external
i have similar problem, like your suggest i try to compile and the message that return to me is this: (i have ubuntu 7.04)

Announcing bagoftricks-0.2.8
hi forum.
i dunno if announcements of this kind belong to the abstractions forum, the patches one or the news one (maybe even the pd-announce mailing list?) but for i wish to share my pack of abstractions with the community, i file it under abstract~.
for those of you who use pd mainly for music synthesis, my bagoftricks might be interesting, i announced it already (0.2.6) together with that shameful electro track i posted here (yes, i can do better .
here's the new version 0.2.8:

from the changes.txt (since 0.2.6):
-added bot.wshaper, capable of cosine, polynomic and some other transform
-fixed pitch bug in bot.blubber, much more usable on idm drums now
-added bot.chord, simple number to harmonic group of numbers converter
-repaired a bunch of ugly bugs in bot.plucker. should be in tune now and cpu
aware
-added bot.paraeq single 2p-bandpass wrapper
-slightly changed bot.distort's behaviour
-added a volume control to bot.blip
-changed bot.filter from using bot.synth2's vcf filterboxes to regular
lp/hp/bp's. saves a lot of cpu, they weren't signal controlled anyway
-bot.revplay can now play forward. idm retriggers hooray!
-added bot.kmute, a keyboard-controlled spigot scheduler
-added "please hurt" to the bot-song-archive
-nailed down some cpu leaks
-added some cpu leaks
-added bot.pong not really finished yet, though, but fun to watch (beware, it
drains some cpu cycles)
-added a new hihat sound to bot.minidrm
-some bugs added, some fixed
-extended bot.sq-piano somewhat
-crippled bot.sq, now depends heavily on bot.sq-piano
enjoy, and don't forget to mail comments, flames or tracks to me.
